New Years Poem

The year’s almost burnt out,

Worn down with 365 wrinkles
Months melted away into memories
Twisted into a bittersweet final night.

Gold edged hills cover the last of the sun,
Weak rays spreading to the waves lapping on my feet
Gradually, we swim through the water
Until we reach the light

Slowly, gold turns to silver, to shadow, to sleep,
While a deep indigo sky
Takes the place of the burning orange
Stars are illuminated by the fading sun

Sips of sweet sugar sustain me,
Through the starlight
Through the last steps the year takes
Through the excitement and chaotic fireworks

A new year bursts through the midnight,
Sprinting through space at a million miles a minute
Falling from the stars and blanketing the world
A quilt of renewed chances, motivation, and hope

Excitement carries us through to dawn
